Capturing the city’s spirit
What better way to celebrate the energy that has brought new life to southern Marseille over the past few years? Building on the momentum from the MUCEM museum and the adjacent Vélodrome sports stadium, the Centre Commercial du Prado made a powerful architectural statement upon its completion in 2018 as a symbol of the city’s resurgence.
Designed to resemble a nineteenth-century retail galleria in Italy, the mall is topped by a canopy with 1,750 inlaid glass panes that seem to hang suspended over the building like a huge hairnet. Both a work of art and an engineering feat, the canopy offers protection from the sun and the mistral winds. It also directs sunlight toward an enormous indoor planted wall that adds to the sense of freshness and tranquility inside the mall.
Served by every form of public transport and offering easy highway access, the Prado sits at the heart of a neighborhood flush with new construction, including office space, hotels and residential buildings, that is attracting a dynamic, high-income population.

The Prado put together a very special Valentine’s Day event this year. With help from the Académie des Métiers, a vocational training organization, the mall set up a job dating session between retailers and job seekers with five weeks of training under their belt. The partnership proved a success, with the Prado hosting several more job events during the year.
