The first covered market in the Netherlands. Like nowhere else!
Can you get any more offbeat and trendy than shopping in the biggest Dutch artwork? That is what the iconic Markthal shopping center is offering, next to the Blaak station in Rotterdam.
Beneath an immense 40 meter arch designed by the architecture agency MVRDV, the first covered market in the Netherlands offers a ground floor dominated by produce from local market gardens. The market also features all the latest culinary concepts, and the British chef Jamie Oliver has opened a restaurant there. Providing the setting for the 96 food stalls is a fresco of flowers, fruits and animals, the work of Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, and the 75 stores including 15 restaurants open their doors to the many tourists curious to see this phantasmagorical arch with their own eyes.
Across its 11,200 sq.m. everything has been designed to offer the best possible welcome to almost eight million visitors a year.

Success Story
Educating visitors and locals, and raising their awareness of sustainable food. That’s the responsible program adopted by the Markthal in 2019. Organized by the City of Rotterdam and the neighboring towns, the "World Food Festival" was again held at the center. This major event testifies to the ambition of the Rotterdam Food Cluster to stimulate job opportunities, the spirit of enterprise, innovation and collaboration in the region’s food sector. While schoolchildren were learning more about potatoes, the shopping center’s restaurants and stalls donated their food waste to the "No waste lunch".
